“We are thankful that the ODFW worker who was driving the truck was not seriously injured,” said Andrew Gibbs, ODFW’s hatchery coordinator for Eastern Oregon. “This is not expected to have an effect on our ability to collect broodstock in the long term or maintain our long-term production goals. “
As a result of the twist of fate, approximately 77,000 smolts arrived at Lookingglass Creek, a tributary of the Grande Ronde River adjacent to the site of the twist of fate. However, an estimated 25,529 smolts did not and their remains were recovered from the tanker or destination twist site area.
Union County Sheriff’s Department emergency response temporarily arrived on the scene, containing a minor diesel fuel spill. They also supported on-site testing and vehicle recovery procedures, avoiding the need for a hazmat spill reaction.
Lookingglass Hatchery, which is dedicated to raising those spring Chinooks, is doing so as part of the Lower Snake River Compensation Plan. Their work is critical to recreational and tribal harvests and complements the endangered wild population of the Imnaha River.
Fisheries control partners, the Nez Perce Tribe (TPN) and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) were notified of the accident. TPN staff assisted in the recovery procedure by assisting with the collection, counting, and digitization of deceased fish tags.
The loss represents about 20% of the total smolts destined to be released into the Imnaha River this year. For this reason, fishery managers estimate that this will result in a reduction of around 500 to 900 adult fish in 2026 and 2027. Conversely, the 77,000 fish that survived will likely populate Lookingglass Creek, resulting in the eventual return of between 350 and 700 adult fish.
